Ancestor to the octopus, nautilus and squid of today, straight shelled nautiloid cephalopods inhabited our oceans approximately 370-400 million years ago. Orthoceras meaning “long horn”, is the fossil left behind today of the shell from these marine creatures, embedded within limestone.
